STATE

Yes, I want to contact state officials.

As it currently stands, the prairie dog is viewed and listed as a "pest" by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Most states with prairie dogs tend to list them as such. Unfortunately, this perspective is shared by state government officials and reflected in broader local and state policies.

The Colorado state government has consistently demonstrated an unwillingness to address the black-tailed prairie dog ecosystem. In addition to ignoring the obvious plight of prairie dogs, the state has actually worked to construct roadblocks for those who are trying to help protect these animals. The residents of Colorado need to demand that their government change its current position on prairie dogs to one of protection and conservation. Educating and putting pressure on key officials at every level is important if policies (and attitudes) are going to improve for the prairie dog.
